For most psychologists, the Ego is the active sense of oneself as an agent,a decider,a planner, an intentional actor. The self, on the other hand, includes all aspects of one's identity.Much of one's identity is imposed by family, friends, and society, and children may have little to say about the identities and roles they are saddled with. Elton John expressed this idea perfectly in his song"Rocketman": "I'm not the man they think I am at home."Not surprisingly, therefore, the stronger one's sense of self as an agent (Ego),the more likely one is to reject imposed or inheritedparts of one's self that one no longer identifies with. This process is most obvious in adolescence, when young people set out to establish a new identity (or at least take charge of the one they inherited as children). Can you think of some point in your history when you chose to modify or change something about your identity?
