For problems 6&7 read the following:
These questions are abstract, the contents of what is actually found in the relations is not of importance. For each, you are to give the minimum number of tuples, and maximum number of tuples. Keep in mind that tuples are in reference to rows found in the relation.
Your answers will be in the form of the numbers or some form where N1 and N2 are part of the answer for question 7. For question 6 you should be using the given numbers of 50,20 and 30.
DO NOT create instances for each of these and provide answers according to "your" tuples. These are answers that should be generalized and based on the size of the relations. To obtain credit you MUST explain your decision, if you do not have an explanation you will not receive credit (I am aware these answers are online - just providing the direct answer will result in a 0 for the question).
6.(15points) Given three relations R1,R2, and R3 with sizes 50,20, and 30 respectively, give the minimum and maximum possible sizes (in tuples) for the resulting relation produced by each of the following relational algebra expressions. In each case, state any assumptions about the schemas for R1,R2 and R3 needed to make the expression meaningful:
a)(R1R2)R3
b)R1(R2R3)
c)(R1-R2)-R3
d)R1R2R3
e)R1R3R2
7.(21points) Give two relations R1 and R2, where R1 contains N1 tuples, R2 contains N2 tuples, and N2>N1>O, give the minimum and maximum possible sizes (in tuples) for the resulting relation produced by each of the following relational algebra expressions. In each case, state any assumptions about the schemas for R1 and R2 needed to make the expression meaningful:
a. R1 U R2
b. R1R2
c. R1-R2
d.R1R2
e.a=5(R1)
f.a(R1)
g.R1R2
