For the Chapter 'Organizational Structure and Design', read Case Application #2 given below, titled "Lift Off" (page 191). Answer the four questions that follow the case that you choose to complete. Your paper should be no more than 2 pages long (single spaced), when answering the question. An example is given below: Case ## Sample Page 1 and 2 1) Why is efficiency and safety so important to UPS? Answer: In my opinion efficiency for UPS is important because of the following reasons: Quality in delivery: UPS is known for their quality in providing service throughout the United States market. Large Scale Deliveries: On a daily basis, UPS undertakes delivery of billion of packages and documents. Customer Trust: These large orders are a result of customer satisfaction and trust they have on the service provided. High Performance: To maintain such kind of an extra ordinary performance and quality they need to be trust worthy as customers can rely on the service that the packets will reach safely and on time to the owner's doorstep. 2) Would you characterize a driver's route decisions as structured or unstructured problems? Programmed or nonprogrammed decisions? Explain. Answer: If a driver plans out his route before starting his journey, based on the addresses given to him that he will be visiting to drop off the packages, then this can be considered as a kind of structured problem. However, if the driver is not given the required data (addresses) well in advance before starting his drive, he may not have sufficient time to structure his route, in this situation his route making decision can be considered as an unstructured problem. Also, unstructured decisions always result in making non-programmed decisions or in other words, non-programmed decisions are made in response to situations that are unstructured. Some drivers do like to follow the old methods for the daily work. They may not have idea about new roadmaps, may face problems by losing track of their ways by getting lost, lack of proper time management, no idea about time calculation for roads. Some of these unexpected conditions may include lack of weather forecast when travelling to different places, a sudden road block causing change in route, etc. Such type of poorly defined, largely unstructured yet unique situations, usually result in nonprogrammed decisions and may have large impact on the goals of the organization. Programmed decisions are simply decisions that are made for situations that have occurred often in the past and allow decision rules to be developed to guide future decisions. 3) How would ORION technology help drivers make better decisions? (Think of the steps in the decisionmaking process.) Answer: ORION helps the drivers in making better decisions by guiding with proper road maps in a very organized manner, so that they can easily achieve their delivery targets, effectively and efficiently. This in turn helps the organization in maintaining their quality and adding value to customer service. In fact, using ORION technology even the new drivers can comfortably and confidently prepare their own strategies in reaching the client and providing an excellent service. It helps them in advance by giving them various information including travel time with different roadway suggestions and guiding them in taking and following proper expert decisions. 4) How is UPS being a sustainable corporation? Answer: a) By adopting new technologies with changing and newer business needs, UPS is capable of completing and growing as an organization. b) Updating the existing and making proper use of available technologies for the organization is what makes it a tough competitor. c) Technological advancement for any growing firm is a big investment, both in terms of capital and investment of time, but UPS gives more importance to customer expectation and satisfaction which can be the major factor sustaining this organization. d) UPS helps the employee in developing on technology platforms thus giving them a chance to grow in the organization; this will help them in completing their job role more efficiently and in reducing stress. I believe that, any organization with such a graph of customer satisfaction vs. growth of employee, has definitely more chance of sustaining in today's ever growing and competitive market.
