For the most part this paragraph below holds true. What about a hybrid company that manufactures and sells directly to a consumer? Dell Computers offers this type of product and service?

The service industry is an industry that is directly interacting with the customers or clients. They are providing their product or service directly to the customer and the interaction they have with them is the main seller of whatever it is they are producing. The manufacturing industry is mainly producing a product that is sold by usually a third party and there is no service to the customer directly by the staff. The product is the the actual product that is being manufactured and there is no direct contact usually between the manufacturer and the customer. It is easiest to determine what category a business falls into by looking at what is being produced. Is it simply a product that is then being shipped off without direct connection to the consumer? Is the production or manufacturing part of the environment that is being produced or is it separate? A service industry may be producing a product, such as food, however, they are also providing a service to the client or customer. They are serving them the prepared product directly.
