For the past 6 years, Jack and Neira have been renting a condo from Goji for $1,500 per month. In August 2009 Jack lost his job as an assembly line manager in an auto manufacturing company. For two months, Jack did his best to nd a new job but has had no success. Given the dramatic reduction in their household income, Jack and Neira realized that they may not be able to afford the monthly rent payment and may have to nd a more affordable apartment. They shared their concern with Goj i, and she immediately said \"I understand your difculties. These are very difcult times indeed. I would really hate to see you leave this condo. You are such excellent tenants! Let me give this some thought.\" Goji asked the couple not to make any decisions before she gets back to them. A week later she returned with a proposed solution: the monthly rent will be reduced to $1,000 per month until Jack nds new employment. Jack and Neira were very pleased with this arrangement and thanked Goji profusely. Six months later Jack nally found a job with a lrniture company that offered him a very handsome salary, which doubled what he earned in his last job. When Goji found out about this new development she notied Jack and Neira that the monthly rent will return to the originally agreed $1,500. In addition, she demanded the back payments owed by the couple, to a total of $3,000. \"It is only fair,\" she said. While Jack and Neira are willing to start paying $1,500 per month from now on, they refuse to make the back payments. The promise made by Goji to reduce the rent to $1,000 per month was gratuitous, and such promises can never be enforced because they are not supported by consideration.
