For the purposes of this assignment assume that you are employed by Highfields Engineering Services Ltd, a division of Highfields Engineering who specialise in the installation and commissioning of machine tools on behalf of their clients. Your company does not recommend a particular machine tool manufacturer but operates a “turnkey” approach to the machine tool specified and purchased by their customer.
The machine tools that Highfields installs range from relatively straightforward manual lathes/milling machines to complex robotic / CNC machine cells.
A contract has been proposed by a prospective client, Aerospace International Ltd to install and commission a large Doosan PUMA 70l CNC lathe at a manufacturing facility near Derby. The machine tool will arrive at the facility in 4 weeks time and the management of the company requires it to be fully commissioned and production-ready within 10 days after that.
The project will be considered to be complete upon successful completion of the final milestone - the first trial production of a component from a CNC program which the client will provide.
Other companies are bidding for the job and your role is to head the team bidding for the contract which is worth £50K, this role will include presenting your plans to a group of engineers.
You need to determine and develop the plans into a workable delivery plan to present to the client, assuming that you are successful in your bid then you will be leading a team of 5 specialists to complete the task.
This plan will include appropriate milestones and timings for:
- Physical unload and transportation of the main part of the machine tool (16,300Kg) from the lorry to where it will be sited, being aware of any potential obstacles during its journey.
- Preparation of the site itself including, (as appropriate), floor levelling, Installation/confirmation of services (air, 3 phase electricity etc.).
- Assembly of machine and connection to services, anchorages. 2nd assembly of ancillary equipment such as the swarf conveyor.
In terms of resources, the successful team will have all of the equipment and any disposables available to it, have all the necessary skills and free access to the site immediately that the contract is awarded.
Naturally, all work should be carried out in accordance with H&S guidelines and this will involve the writing of risk assessments, method statements and procedures.
Task 1
Using Microsoft Project, (or an equivalent), produce the project/services delivery plan with dated tasks. Include justifiable milestones of the installation and commissioning contract to ensure the confidence of the end-user.
Task 2
Produce and present a PowerPoint, (or an equivalent), which identifies and evaluates contingencies that the end-user needs to be aware of regarding commissioning.
