-1 = 6 8 PART 2A: DATA AVAILABILITY AND SELECTION (ESTIMATED TIME: 80 MINUTES) - 20 POINTS Additional Documents Needed to Complete this part of the Lab: "Availability of WDI Dota by Year.xlsx We'll be using data from the World Development Indicators public databank. The "Availability of WDI Data by Year" Excel file was created for you. It provides information on every possible measure, including number of countries reporting for various years, data source, relevance, and limitations. In this part of the lab, you will review these measures and choose at least two possible dependent in variables to represent your topic and 3-5 explanatory or independent (X) variables other than GDP per capita. STEP 1. Open "Availability of WDI Data by Year.xlsx" provided in the Data Analysis and Writing section in Learn. Check out the "Suggested" tab - it shows measures from the WDI databank that are available for most countries. Note that the numbers provided are the number of countries (and country groupings) each year that reported each measure. (For example, under the "Health" category, we see that in 2009, 247 countries reported "Life expectancy at birth, total (years)".) Scroll down the list to see what is available and what sounds most interesting to you to represent your topic! Be sure to choose variables that have 150 or more countries. You can also check out the other tabs on the sheet for a more comprehensive list. STEP 2. Choose at least 2 possible y variables that closely represent your topic. Use direct rather than indirect measures. For example, if your topic is health, choose infant mortality or life expectancy, both of which are directly related to health, rather than number of doctors, which is an input to health. Refer to any readings you did to prepare for lab to help you choose wisely. Later on, you will need to defend your choices Ask the instructor if you are unsure. STEP 3. Now, share with me your chosen, potential Y-variables. To do so, copy the Indicator, Indicator Code and Year columns for the variables you chose in the "Availability" excel file and paste cells into the following table (example in gray- please over write or delete): Possible Y variables to measure my topic Indicator Code 201 Number of Countries or Regions Reporting in Each Year 201 201 201 201 201 201 201 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 246 246 248 246 246 246 245 245 239 239 239 239 239 239 239 239 Life expectancy at birth, total (years) Mortality rate, infant (per 1,000 live births) possible indicator 3. 200 9 247 239 SP.DYN.LEOO.IN SPDYN.IMRT.IN 201 8 0 0 -1 = 6 8 PART 2A: DATA AVAILABILITY AND SELECTION (ESTIMATED TIME: 80 MINUTES) - 20 POINTS Additional Documents Needed to Complete this part of the Lab: "Availability of WDI Dota by Year.xlsx We'll be using data from the World Development Indicators public databank.
