For this assessment, you will be required to a report which requires extensive research, and answers to include as much information as possible, including references to data, facts, graphs or other relevant information. In addition to the report question below, you should aim to incorporate your understanding of economic concepts and theories introduced in the course's first 6 weeks (Microeconomics) and their application to world or practical situations. Written submissions should be approximately one thousand five hundred words in length, professionally presented, and formatted for report style. Font should be 12pt times roman, 1.5 x line spacing, and all work appropriately referenced using the Harvard AGPS Referencing system. Research tasks: 1. Research prices for a product that interests you in a country of your choice. (ensure it meets the required criteria as outlined below). 2. Consider various theoretical concepts presented in chapters 1-9 (Micro-economics) and how they are applied, including how the impact of government/industry intervention (or lack of) has impacted the demand/supply for that product; the prices for that product, and the evident market structure that the product is sold in. 3. Discuss some advantages & disadvantages of government intervention (or lack of) concerning your chosen product; and what type of product you have chosen. Whether these have been positive or negative impacts on consumers & the market. Report question to respond to 4. Based on your discussion, provide an opinion as to whether intervention should continue or not continue in the price discovery of your chosen product. Please bold your thesis statement in your introduction paragraph. The thesis statement MUST respond to this report question. Thesis statement example 1: The government should continue/should not continue to intervene in the price discovery of in. Thesis statement example 2: The government needs to/should not intervene in the price discovery of in.
NOTES (in addition to helping you select a product & how to address what the report requires): The key to addressing this report properly, relevantly & validly is you need to specifically address what has been asked above. If you cannot answer some example questions below, then you could well have (most likely have) chosen the wrong product, or need to undertake further research: Exactly what has the Government done (or not done) directly in regards to this product? (be able to verify this with facts or references). So is the Government intervention a tax, subsidy, regulation, law or something else? How has this action (or lack of action) affected either the demand for the product; supply for the product or both? What effect has the intervention (or lack thereof) had on the price or pricing structure of the product? What type of product is this, that you are reporting on? What type of market structure is this product involved in & how does that work? Ideally in your report, these are the KEY factors that need to be addressed correctly & appropriately. If you cannot address or answer questions like these in your report, then do you have an issue with the chosen product? Or you have simply not addressed in the report, what was required? (you can check with your teacher about the product you have chosen and ascertain if it is appropriate). Assessment specifications: This is report style and must be written objectively in the third person (no use of our, we, he, she, I, you etc.) The first paragraph/section should contain an introduction to what you are talking about. The final paragraph/section should contain your conclusion and overall position statement (opinion) - do not use "I"! Newspaper articles are for background reading only and information contained in the newspaper articles ideally should not be cited, or used for the report, unless it is used as an example only to demonstrate analysis of theory applied in the report, and if so, the article must be cited. Minimum number of required sources: Prescribed textbook + 1 Government website/document/publication citation + 1 other relevant article/fact/statistic on your chosen & valid topic. Hint - when constructing your annotated bibliography, summarise the issue from industry/government sources, for that issue, paraphrase relevant theory from the textbook, and paraphrase outcomes found in scholarly journal articles in other countries or industries which support your argument.
