For this assignment, as individuals, you will be conducting an analysis around current issues related to corporate social responsibility. You will choose a company that has recently (i.e., in the past calendar year) been reported through news media (e.g., BBC, CBC, National Post, etc.) for violating something under the larger CSR umbrella.

Assignment Objective

Your objective is to unpack, assess, and analyze how the chosen company is performing in terms of social, environmental, and economic activities, and what prompted them to be featured in the news.

You will need to conduct independent research to determine how the company is engaging in SR activities and what kind of metrics (e.g., KPIs) are being used to assess them (if any).

In your written report, as individuals, respond to the following questions around your chosen topic:

1. Why were they featured in the media? What happened? How did they respond?
2. How are each of the spheres of sustainability (social, environmental, economic) considered?
3. Do they have a social license to operate? Why or why not?
4. What are the metrics being used to assess their SR performance?
5. Is the company meeting, exceeding, or failing in terms of CSR?

Assignment Format

The general written assignment format should be as follows:

1. Introduction: Provide an overview of your topic and why you chose it.

1. Background: Provide a background of the situation featured in the news and describe what happened, and how did (if at all) the company responded. Also detail your research process used to gain relevant facts and insights about related SR initiatives beyond the news article.
2. Sustainability: How are each of the spheres of sustainability (social, environmental, economic) considered?
3. Social License to Operate: In general, does the company appear to have a social license to operate? Why or why not?
4. Performance: What are the metrics the company is using to assess CSR performance?
5. Conclusion: Provide a summary of key points from your findings (beyond the news article and articulate in your opinion whether the company is meeting, exceeding, or failing in terms of CSR.
6. References: Using APA citations, ensure all external references are cited appropriately.

Your written submission should be a maximum of 3 pages. The title page and references page are not included in your total page count.
