This course provides an overview of management functions, fundamental principles of business strategy, individual differences, motivation and leadership for beginning management majors. It will help students understand the various influences on worker attitudes and behaviors so that they can better manage their workforce and thus guide that workforce toward realizing organizational objectives.

Successful organizations strive to hire the best talent and seek innovative strategies on how to retain them. Leaders attempt to create an environment that is appealing by soliciting feedback on what motivates them to stay. This course examines the field of organizational behavior and the various research strategies in areas such as personality, motivation, values, stress, leadership skills, power bases, and communication. It is designed to explore the attitudes and behavior of leaders and employees.

2. Business –Operations Research

Course Objectives

CO-1: Describe the basic concepts involved in Operations Research.

CO-2: Identify the factors, variables, risks and uncertainties, economic models, and analytics involved in operations decision-making.

CO-3: Identify the various manufacturing and service system designs and capacity planning methods.

CO-4: Identify facility and location factors, theories, and models, and plant layouts important to efficient, cost-effective, and sustainable production and/or service organization.

CO-5: Describe the various forecasting qualitative and quantitative methods and models available to operations managers.

CO-6: Describe the functions of a functioning supply chain (materials) management system from the standpoint of purchasing, inventory and logistics controls, and JIT manufacturing concepts.

CO-7: Summarize in detail the concepts of aggregate planning and master scheduling.

CO-8: Describe the activities involved with initiating and controlling production activities, including measuring performance, flow-shop scheduling, job-shop challenges, and machine scheduling.

Course Scope

(Operations Research) will address the basics of operation research and how it influences work design, planning, analysis, and quality related to business decisions.

Course Description:
 This course introduces Operations Research and includes the application of operations research and management science techniques to management decision problems. Operations research techniques and methods can be applied to problems in virtually all-functional areas of business including accounting, finance, marketing, production and human resources. Examples from each of these areas will be covered during the
 course. A feature of the course is that Microsoft Excel is used to implement some of the techniques covered. This means that you will become proficient in using Excel; the most widely used electronic spreadsheet in business today.

3. Business – law and ethics in business environment

Course Description: This course develops skills for inquiry into the business environment from a legal and ethical perspective. Students explore the relationships between modern business and the environment, in addition to the ethical issues that arise when diverse interests intersect. Relevant topics will include contracts, commercial law (sales, secured transactions and creditors remedies), forms of business entities (including limited liability companies and corporations), agency, employer- employee relationships, real property concepts, bankruptcy, and negligence and strict liability concepts. Students will examine corporate governance and business ethics, with emphasis on case studies.

4.  Business - Critical Thinking Strategies for Business Decisions

Course Description: 

This course provides students opportunities for analysis, synthesis, and application of critical thinking applied to decision-making at all levels in an organization. This course equips students with critical thinking skills to identify problems utilizing rational decision-making. Students learn to solve organizational problems and provide strategic direction based on critical thinking.

Course Scope:

 Students taking this course will examine the decision-making process, from problem formulation and identification to argument construction and support. The emphasis is on understanding the rudiments of a compelling idea that is communicated credibly and persuasively. Critical thinking is central to the rational decision-making that is common in business and everyday life and is the key to identifying beneficial choices and creating persuasive proposals. Students will focus on examining arguments, researching positions, and writing convincing articles.
