For this assignment, you will be writing a dialogue between a person in BC with a problem in need of resolution and a representative at the Ombudsperson's office.

Step 1

Start by browsing through some of the case summaries on the website of the Office of the Ombudsperson.

Find a case that interests you.

Step 2

Imagine that you are the person featured in the case study. Put yourself in that person's shoes. For this dialogue, you will be speaking as that person and will use the pronoun "I."

Write an outline or rough draft in which you tell the story of the person in the case study from the first person point of view by way of a phone call. The dialogue will go roughly as follows.

Person phones ombudsperson's office and the representative answers the phone. This person introduces him/herself then begins to explain the issue as a summary. The representative asks for clarification and details. The caller provides those details. You might have to make some of these up. The representative explains what can be done. The caller states what he or she needs to feel that this issue has been resolved. The representative explains what the next step will be and what to expect.

Step 3

Find a photograph online of someone who you think could represent the caller then find another to represent the representative. This will help you to visualize these people talking to one another. It might help to have photos of people speaking on the phone. You could take these photos yourself of people who you know. You will be including these photos in the assignment.

Step 4

Write a good copy of the dialogue. Make sure that it includes all of the details and that it progresses from general to specific. Do your best to make it sound like a real dialogue. You can include extra information in square brackets [laughs] or [long pause].

Use the first name of the person in the case study and make up a name for the representative. Format the dialogue like this:

Peter: Hello, I have an issue that I need some help with.

Janet: Certainly. I am Janet. I can see what I can do to help you with that.

Step 5

Put a title at the top of the assignment. Put the photos of the two speakers side by side, naming each in a caption.

Copy and paste the case study into your document.

Follow this with the properly formatted dialogue.
