For this learning task, you will use a map to demonstrate what you have learned about distance () and displacement (). For each scenario, you must adhere to the following rules:

  • The route chosen must be Earth-bound (paths/trails, roads, railways, waterways, etc., but NOT by air).
  • The route chosen must have at least five segments (see below for an example).
  • The route chosen must properly demonstrate the scenario. If you feel the scenario is not possible, you must explain why.

By using themeasuring tool, you can measure individual segment lengths, as well as the length from your starting point to your ending point. You can also achieve this by using a ruler and the scale on a paper map.

The four scenarios you must make are:

  • Scenario 1: Make a route where the distance travelled is equal to the displacement.
  • Scenario 2: Make a route where the distance travelled is greater than the displacement.
  • Scenario 3: Make a route where the distance travelled is less than the displacement.
  • Scenario 4: Make a route where the distance travelled is greater than the displacement, AND the displacement is zero.

For this assignment, we will only consider the magnitude (not the direction) of the displacement. Though if you would like to also determine the direction, you are most welcome to.MathsTeacher.com can help you to learn more about determining directions of vectors.

Be sure to explain your routes using words, mathematics, and images. You may choose a suitable format for your assignment such as a Google Doc, screen captures or photos of your maps, an audio file, a video, a presentation (Powerpoint, Prezi, Google Slides, Powtoon, etc.), or some other method agreed upon with your teacher.

Provide a short explanaition for each scenario.
