For this question do the following:

Compare and contrast the criminal laws in 5 different states on a single topic (it can be narrow or specific).

You could look generally at the treatment of hate crimes in Alaska, California, Washington, Oregon and Montana, for example.

Or you could look at the specific penalty or range of penalties for a certain offense in five southern states.

Perhaps choose something of interest to you. Maybe you are curious about DUI or homicide or cannabis or gun laws.

All the statutes are online at state sites (not always easy to find, though) or available through secondary sources.

This is one unique aspect of our legal system--conduct in one state may be illegal while not in another. There are some mind boggling examples just in our text. A misdemeanor possession of marijuana in one state may be a felony (for same amount) or even legal in another. When we get to family law, you may notice a legal marriage in one state can be sexual abuse of a minor in a neighboring state.

Perhaps the divergence is more stark than ever in some areas of law (like marijuana, e.g.) and more subtle but important in other areas.
