For this week's discussion assignment, write about some hypotheses YOU would like to test in the real world. Imagine you were given unlimited time and funding for these endeavors, what hypotheses within the realm of social science do you think would be great to explore? For instance, personally, I would love to test a number of hypotheses in the realm of education. As one example, I'd test the effect of class size on student outcomes. This could be examined with a hypothesis test (Ch. 8), since there is already plenty of established data regarding student grades in the current sized classrooms (which, for my courses is around 45 students). Thus, I could create a study in which a smaller group, perhaps n=10 students, takes the exact same course from me, and compare the mean grade for this treatment group to the population mean of all students in those past larger classrooms. This would, in theory, provide evidence as to whether or not smaller class sizes can increase student success. Unfortunately for me and for you, I don't get to choose the size of my classes so this isn't currently feasible... but that's a discussion for another day.
