Forklift trucks and MHE safe operations are necessary to be taught, understood and enforced in all workplaces that use these essential material movers. A lot of time, care and thought has gone into the scope of the training, program, maintenance and mitigations to reduce FLT and MHE injuries.

For this assignment, we want you to identify what elements should be included in a Pedestrian Safety Program for your company. Pedestrian Safety is not a specific part of any legislation or regulation and not very well covered in FLT guidelines or standards.

Assume you work for a large warehouser of consumer products for the cleaning industry. All product comes in palletized and wrapped from 10 shipping/receiving docks. The product is stored in your 400,000 sq foot warehouse on racking systems until they need to be shipped to stores and points of sale. Your employees operate the forklifts, and there are many re-packing areas where pallets are taken so employees will break down the bulk pallets and sort product. The individual products will be re-packed for individual distribution. There are approximately 15 forklifts, 10 pallet movers, and 5 order pickers in the warehouse. There are 150 employees for re-packaging and sort. This is on each shift with two 8-hour shifts per day.

Briefly, based on any personal knowledge you may have, and via sound hazard reduction logic, identify:

1. Three to Five Safe Operating Procedures or Practices that the Forklift Operators must follow in order to reduce the risk of Pedestrian accidents. i.e. Always stop at every intersection and blind spot and sound your horn before proceeding.
2. Three to Five Pedestrian "Rules" or Directives you think that all pedestrians should have to follow and adhere to in order to reduce the risk of forklift accidents, i.e. Give forklifts and MHEs the right of way as they can't stop on a dime, and
3. Three to Five Company "Rules" or Directives for all employees to follow in order to make the facility safer i.e. Everyone must wear reflective vests in the facility at all times.
