In 2022, Brazil's FDI inflows totaled around $86 billion, a large increase from 2021 and a signal that economic activity was recovering from a COVID-induced low. (UNCTAD, 2023). Conversely, Brazil's FDI outflows in 2022 were around $25 billion, a $5 billion increase from the year before. As this data suggests, Brazil is the recipient of far more FDI than it doles out. Interestingly, the United States is the chief investor in Brazil, representing approximately 25% of FDI in the country (Brazil - Investment Climate Statement, 2023). As in many cases, FDI has allowed Brazil's economy to grow exponentially, especially in the 21st century. Of further interest is the impact Brazil's last president, Jair Bolsonaro, had on FDI, especially as it concerns environmental issues. Deforestation has long been a concern in Brazil given the Amazon Rainforest's large presence within the country.
