Four elementary teachers were discussing their handling of homework in their classes. “They know they have to do it to do well on the tests,” Jo Buck comments, “but I don’t collect it or grade it.” “I don’t grade it either, but I check to see if they did it, and they know they get a check mark in my grade book if they did it,” Art Ames adds. “It’s a part of my grading system,” Karen Warner continues. “I collect every assignment, score it, and record the scores.” “I spot check them,” Lynn Peet adds. “They know it may or may not be collected, and I try to avoid falling into a pattern. I grade it and record the grades when I do collect it.” Based on research, which teacher’s homework practice is least effective? Explain, again using social cognitive theory as the basis for your explanation. . https://mediaplayer.pearsoncmg.com/assets/using_assessment_decision_making_14_1 https://mediaplayer.pearsoncmg.com/assets/Seg3_UsingChecklists_14_3
When teachers give homework its a way to practice the lesson at home. However, teachers use it as a tool to have grades for them. Homework is important, a great way for students to understand the lesson and be able to practice on their own. Also, a great way for the teacher to see for student understanding and ask questions. However, Jo Buck's homework practice is least effective.
Jo Buck's view on homework is least effective, the reason being because he's just having students complete it. He doesn't have a goal for the students if and when they complete it. I think students won't take the learning process seriously knowing that he doesn't take it for a grade. Homeowork is a great way to teach students to work independently as well for them to take responsibility for their learning process. On the other hand, for teaching it helps them determine how the lessons are being understood by their students. The article emphasizes, "Homework is important because it develops core skills in young children that will serve them throughout school and working life" (Anglia, 2021).
"Social cognitive theory emphasizes the learning that occurs within a social context. In this view, people are active agents who can both influence and are influenced by their environment" (Nickerson, 2023). If students are motivated by their teacher to do homework and he mentions that he'll reward them. More than likely students will want to do their homework. "This motivation can come from a variety of sources, such as desire to achieve a goal" (Nickerson, 2023). Which for Jo Buck, he doesn't emphasize the importance of homework nor motivates students to want to be better learners. If he can change that he would be able to increase students view on homework.
In continuaiton, imitation is most likely going to continue to occur. If the teacher performs a negative behavior, students will imitate that Mr. Jo Buck shows that he doesn't emphasize a grade for the exam. So students won't be able to want to excel. Mr. Jo Buck shows a least effective homework practice. "The use of homework logs to track students practices has been shown to be an effective self-monitoring tool in educational settings" (Bembenutty & While L, 2012).
