Fragrance Wan is a make-up sales assistant and is employed by a cosmetics company.

a) The contract provides that salary is $1200. This is far below the market rate of

$1800. Can a term be implied that Fragrance should get reasonable salary - ie: the

market rate? In this connection, should Singapore Labour Policy be that though a

minimum wage does not have to paid, at least the employee must be remunerated at

market rates?

b) The management of the cosmetic company is also unhappy that Fragrance

smokes. Do you think because of the nature of her job as a make-up sales assistant,

she should not smoke? If you think the facts are not clear and you need to make

assumptions, you may do so. If you were the cosmetic company - and if such

things were important to the management, what should the management have

done?
