Freedom of speech is defined as the 'right to speak, write, and share ideas and opinions without facing punishment from the government' (LII, n.d.). This allows for the freedom of the press and to report and publish news articles that are based on current events or misinformation. As well as the possibility of protest, religion, art, literature. The law does prohibit speech that is deemed harmful, defamatory, and obscene. Information that is defamatory towards someone which includes libel and spoken information. This can harm the person's reputation if done with malice intentions, in other words trying to harm this person's career. It is up to the person that is suing to find the fault and prove the defamation. Freedom of speech should be universal; it is a way that we can communicate our approvals and disapprovals in society. These means of conversations should not be curtailed as seen in other governments. Some known countries according to World Population Review that have curtailed or impeded the freedom of speech include, Laos, North Korea, Syria, and Eritrea. (World Population Review, n.d.) As stated above, speech is important, it can also come in various ways, it is important to have freedom of speech as it allows us to share valuable information, even information that can bring an improvement to society. Although speech can be very perspective and bias, as it can be used for good, and it can be used for bad. I do not believe that speech should be curtailed, I believe that it should contain an information label that has been fact checked, any or all claims towards a topic need to be fact checked. If misinformation was spread on the daily basis, then it would bring havoc across scholar and non-scholar readers, as more fear and lack of trust would fill the world and bring doubt to any act that is done by any person of authority or entity.
