From: Eddie Salle To: MAN 6297 Class Date: October 28, 2023 Re: Issues in the workplace You receive a visit one morning from Luna, a long-time employee of company ABC. Luna is a relatively new, hourly administrative assistant to one of the company's supervisors at its main administrative ofce. She came to Human Resources to share some interactions she had with employees at the warehouse the previous day. You asked Luna to elaborate, and she told you the following story: Yesterday, Luna mistakenly received a package at the administration ofce that was addressed to Ralph, a warehouse worker with the company for the past 15 years. Being still kind of new and not having met most of th roughly 80 employees across 4 different work sites, Luna thought it would be nice to visit Ralph's work site to bring over the package. Ralph worked at a warehouse with a small, attached ofce. Since she had been planning to eat lunch at a sandwich shop near Ralph's work site (which was about a 15- minute drive away), Luna thought it would make sense to just bring along the package and drop it off, before she grabbed her lunch. Just before she clocked out at 12:00 for her one-hour lunch break, she called to let Ralph know that she would be swinging by at around 12: 15. Ralph said he was glad that she called, because she caught him just in time. He was about to punch out to go get lunch, but said he would instead keep working while waiting for her arrival and would just go to lunch a little late. Due to unexpected trafc, Luna was delayed a bit, and she arrived at the warehouse at 12:35. A very hungry Ralph was frustrated that Luna had delayed him so much, and he commented, \"Man, you took forever to get here. Figures, though, you Cubans are always running late... running on Cuban time! Thanks for nothing! Next time, at least do me the favor of rolling by during my morning or afternoon break... that way I'm at least I'm on company time and not missing my lunch!\" Ralph was clearly upset, so Luna handed over the package and left. On her way out, she passed through the attached ofce and noticed Ralph's supervisor, Julia. She asked Julia if everything was ok with Ralph and shared their recent conversation. Julia snapped back: \"Oh, I'm sick of hearing from Ralph complain. He's always whining about work. But don't worry about it, Celia Cruz. You just hop on your thirdworld-country raft and cruise back to your ofce now!\" Luna was shocked at the statement this supervisor just made to her, so she didn't know what to say. Then Julia followed up, \"Do you not understand? El raft-o. You leave-o. Adios!\" Luna rushed off to leave. On her way out of the ofce, Luna decided to use the restroom by the building exit. She had heard that the company had just renovated the bathrooms into really nice, private, individual restrooms, and she gured she would check one of them out. As she entered, Luna startled a female employee who was inside, sitting on the oor with a breast pump and two bottles that she was in the process of lling with expressed breast milk. This employee Jackie had just returned from giving birth to her rst child. Surprised to encounter Jackie, Luna asked, \"Umm... what are you doing here?!\" Jackie responded that she was taking one of her many breaks to do her pumping, but that Julia told her that the warehouse didn't have any private offices other than Julia's (the supervisor of the site). She said she couldn't afford the cost of buying baby formula, so she needed to pump. But she admitted that the many breaks were reducing her paychecks, so she wondered if she was actually saving any money in the long run. Jackie vented that Julia had told her she didn't want anyone doing \"their baby milk thing\" in her ofce, and that Jackie should feel free to fmd somewhere else to do it. Jackie apologized to Luna for forgetting to lock the bathroom door, stating that she is in and out of there so frequently that Julia jokes, \"We're just going to make that your new office!\" Luna apologized for interrupting and said she would leave, when Jackie said, \"It's ok. I'm just about done with this pumping and can chat while I pack my stuff up." Luna then mentioned her interactions with Ralph and Julia just a moment prior. Jackie replied, \"Yeah, I'm actually not surprised to hear that. That sounds like Julia all right. And I wouldn't pay any attention to Ralph. He's a jerk. He's probably just upset because his buddy is out another week for his back injury. He fell from a ladder last week and got hurt pretty bad. Ralph is pissed off that he has been stuck working with this kid Julia brought in to work for a bit. I think it's her nephew, who's on summer break from high school. Fifteen or sixteen years old, I think. And let me tell you... I understand Ralph's frustration, because that kid is clueless. The other day, he drove the forklift into a bunch of boxes and made a huge mess. So Ralph told him to leave it alone and has had him running up the ladders to fetch stuff from the top warehouse shelves. Ralph has a bit of a fear of heights, and we shelves that are nearly 30 feet high. Jackie then shares that Ralph has been complaining to anyone who will listen about his pay, openly venting that he's not getting paid enough to do that work. He was really upset that Julia deducted the cost of new uniforms from his paycheck. [You later conrmed that Julia did in fact deduct the cost of 5 new uniforms from Ralph's paycheck. As a result, his usual weekly pay of $400 for 40 hours was reduced to $300.] Luna looked down at her watch and realized that it was about 12:50. She would hardly have enough time to get back to the ofce on time, so she hastily said goodbye and ran out to her car. She somehow managed to get back to the ofce right at 1:00, and she worked the remainder of her day without issue. As she was wrapping up her shift and getting ready to clock out for the day, her supervisor, Mayra, stopped her and asked why she had revised her time sheet to reect that she had logged 9 hours from her 8:00 am start time until 5:00 pm, and she scribbled out her punch out for the lunch hour. Luna explained that she never had a chance to eat her lunch and was instead running the errand of delivering the package. Mayra replied, \"Oh, I never authorized that. We don't have budget for any overtime, so that time is on you.\" Mayra said she was adding that lunch hour back in, which Luna didn't feel was fair.
