According to Noe et al. (2021, pp. 223-224) onboarding is the ongoing process of to prepare new employees for full participation within the organization while orientation is training designed to prepare employees to perform their jobs, learn about the firm, and establish work relationships.
Orientation is used by many, if not all, firms in order to bring new hires up to speed on origination policies, work expectations as well as the history and mission of the firm. This process is of great use in entry level position where the employee may not have any knowledge of how to perform the job specific tasks. Food service workers, for example, often have a "break-in" or probationary period when they first start work in order to learn the daily tasks, meet other members of the team (forming relationships), and allowing for questions and even mistakes to be made under supervision of senior employees.
Onboarding is a step further where firms aim to fully integrate a new employee into a firm (establish buy-in) by preparing them to comply with company policies and rules, clarifying job requirements, understanding the organizational culture, and connecting with co-workers (Noe et al. 2021, pp. 224). This process allows for better understanding of job requirements, better establishes relationships from the start, and clearly states expectations on performance, behavior and policy.
