Group Research Project
General
As outlined on your syllabus 30% of your final grade in the course is determined by your group research project. The project is broken into three parts (described below). Each part is worth 10% of your final grade. The parts are due periodically throughout the semester (the due dates are outlined below). As outlined on the syllabus, late submissions will receive a mark of zero.
Groups
The project can be completed in groups of 3,4 individuals. You have group members allocated(randomly) to you in Blackboard. It is expected that all groups' members will participate equally and fully throughout the full project. Failure to do so will result in a reduction in your individual grade. It is each group's responsibility to contact me with any group issues. Group issues will be dealt with on a case by case basis.
Marking Methodology/Expectations
Submissions will be marked based on grammatical correctness, proper citation/referencing, quantity and quality of Statistical tools/ methods used that are covered in the course, and cohesiveness and clarity of the submission. Please Note: Plagiarism is an academic offense that will, at a minimum, result in a zero grade on the submission and may result in further academic discipline. Please see the syllabus for more details.
Research Project Details
Part A: Project Selection, Objective and Hypothesis (10% of your final grade)
Each group will define a topic they would like to research, provide some history/background on the subject, chose and define an objective for the topic and come up with a hypothesis to test in support of the chosen objective.
Each group will define a topic they would like to research and provide detail of variables (at least 3 Quantitative independent variables and one dependent quantitative variable, you can add 2 or more qualitative variables

Statistical Tools used for Quantitative Analysis (Graphical Presentation of Quantitative data central Tendency, Measure of Variation, Correlation, Regression, and any other tool taught in class)
For qualitative Data Analysis (check chapter 2 and chapter 12)
For example, a group may be interested in the effect a smaller ice surface has on the quality of a hockey game. Your historical analysis could include statistics on different ice surface sizes and summaries on variables that could affect game quality such as goals per game, attendance, ice surface, rate of player injury etc. Your objective could be to determine the quality of the game in an NHL arena (smaller ice surface) and your hypothesis may be that the smaller ice surface has no effect on game quality.
Your submission should be typed in Microsoft Word, be 3 to 5 pages in length (including summary graphs and charts), double spaced, font size 11.
Marks will be given for the variety of Statistical data collection covered in the course used in the historical summary, as well as grammatical correctness, proper citation/referencing, cohesiveness and clarity of the submission, including clarity of the objective and hypothesis you will be testing
Part B: Statistical Methodology and Analysis (10% of your final grade)
Each group will conduct Statistical analysis to test their given hypothesis. The Statistical analysis will need to include both qualitative and quantitative data (both primary and secondary data sources) using both descriptive and inferential statistical methods discussed in class, appropriate data summarizations, and a conclusion of your findings as they relate to your hypothesis. The variables and data summaries need to help in the analysis of your hypothesis
Your submission should be typed in Microsoft Word, be 4 to 6 pages in length (including summary graphs and charts), double spaced, font size 11.
Marks will be given for the quality and variety of Statistical tools used, proper interpretation of the analysis and a clear and concise conclusion using statistics for the hypothesis the group is testing. Grammatical correctness, proper citation/referencing, cohesiveness and clarity of the submission will also be graded.
Part C: In class presentation and final executive summary report (10% of your final grade)
Each group will present their findings to the class in a formal presentation. The presentation should include a brief summary/history on the chosen subject, the objective and hypothesis the group tested, a summary of the key Statistical results and the conclusion relative to the hypothesis
Marks will be given for presentation format, presentation tools used (e.g., PowerPoint, appropriate visuals such as graphs), clarity of the objective, hypothesis, data summary and conclusion, grammatical correctness and proper citation/referencing. The presentation length will be determined at a later date.
Please Note: Each group member is required to present.
In addition, an executive summary including a brief summary/history on the chosen subject, the objective and hypothesis the group tested, a summary of the key Statistical results and the conclusion relative to the hypothesis will be required for submission. Marks will be given for appropriate visuals such as graphs and/or charts, clarity of the objective, hypothesis, data summary and conclusion, grammatical correctness and proper citation/referencing
