She believes in purdah (the practice of secluding wives) and the subordination of women to men. Abebi feared the violence and witnessed her father and brother murdered. Now awaiting legal status in the United States, you are assigned to work with her. She is 13 years old and does not want to go to school. Abebi hopes to marry soon. She finds it abhorrent to dress as most 13 year olds do in the United States. As a result, she appears oppositional to U.S. cultural expectations and is strong-willed.
