first draft - Topic selection and proposal

In this assignment, there are four parts that we must complete: topic selection and proposal, annotated bibliography and outline, working thesis and introduction, and final essay. The first step requires us to choose a topic from the winter term reading and relate it to the fall term. We must connect the essential ideas, readings, and theories necessary to the course. This assignment will help teach students how to do university-level research for this assignment and how to write university-level. The primary goal of the assignment is to use critical thinking to analyze the topic we will pick.

Sexual and gender-based violence is a potential topic I would like to look at in this case study. I can discuss various key concepts, including women's rights, discrimination, human rights, etc. Using the concept of women's rights, I can elaborate on how most women experience physical and sexual violence daily. Women are affected by violence regardless of colour, ethnicity, sexual orientation, age, etc., using the concept; Human rights include rights to safety, freedom, and the absence of torture. I can also use discrimination because it's unsafe to be treated differently depending on gender. The reading related to sexual and gender-based violence is "African American policy forum (2008) A primer on intersectionality". Reproductive rights are the second topic I'd like to look into. I could use concepts from the fall term, such as discrimination, women's rights, and intersectionality. Using the concept of women's rights, Women should be allowed to make their own decisions.. Using the concept of intersectionality, everyone has the right to their needs and human rights. I can use discrimination because abortion is illegal in many countries; it is unfair that most women cannot access safe abortion clinics, leading many women to choose to abort their children in dangerous and illegal clinics. "Women's rights as human rights" in week two of the fall term is a reading I can use. The reading talks about how, In Latin America, complications from illegal abortions are the leading cause of death for women between the ages of fifteen and thirty-nine (Bunch, 1990).

Sexual gender-based violence is the topic I would like to explore in this case study. Women. Gender-based violence has a detrimental impact on mental health, damaging the sense of self-worth and triggering depression, self-harm, PTSD, anxiety, and suicidal ideation, as well as having long-term consequences such as lower educational attainment and reduced economic opportunities.

questions to answers - Thesis from previous assignments & answers to the following questions

Review your first draft and working thesis and ask yourself:

  1. Do you answer the question?See page 1 of the original assignmentdocument to locate the assignment objective and consider it phrased as a question. (i.e. how does the research you are using apply to your topic?).
  2. Have you taken a position that others might challenge or oppose? If you simply state facts, or provide information, you are likely only presenting a summary. You will need to do something with the information. Find your way in to make an argument.
  3. Is ur thesis statement focused and specific enough?A strong thesis provides a clear sense of direction, establishes a sense of priority and parameters for discussion. If your thesis contains qualitative words like 'good', or 'important' push yourself to be more specific - why is it good or important? Establish clear parameters for discussion.
  4. Does ur thesis pass the "So what?" test?If a reader's first response is likely to be "So what?" then you need to clarify - forge a relationship/connect to a larger issue. Why is this significant? What are the implications that you want the reader to appreciate?
  5. Does ur essay support my thesis specifically and without wandering? If your thesis and the body of your essay do not seem to go together, one of them has to change.
  6. Does my thesis pass the "how and why?" test?If a reader's first response is "how?" or "why?" your thesis may be too open-ended and lack guidance for the reader. See what you can add to give the reader a better take on your position right from the beginning.

2.Introduction[1st paragraph/page of the paper, approximately in addition to the thesis] & working thesisin developed form and requiredformat**See Sample Thesis and Explanation

  • Your introduction should include enough information to put your essay into context. Offer an explanation of the key terms you will be using. Provide a road map that indicates how your essay will answer the assignment objectives, and confirm your position.
  • The thesis should be the last sentences of your introductory paragraph.
  • Intro (inc thesis)

3. An assessmentof the work completed and work ahead

  1. At what stage of 'readiness' is your draft at this point? How did you get here?
  2. What do you have left to do? Where do you most need another set of eyes?
  3. What kind of feedback is going to be most helpful for you at this point?
