General Psychology Scenario: Veteran's with PTSD

The following is a research hypothesis that has been based on a scenario of a small clinic where there are patients that are veterans and are being treated for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) with cognitive processing theory (CPT).

The Problem/Issue

The clinicians at the clinic have discovered new research that indicates virtual reality (VR) is also a highly effective treatment option for patients that suffer from PTSD).

The Testing

The testing will be based on a data set with two sets of interval data (numbers) and the numbers are decided if they represent method A results or method B results. There are 30 in each group.

Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT)

The therapy used to treat post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in the small clinic given is cognitive processing therapy (CPT); however new approaches have been introduced recently: one of them being virtual reality treatment (VR). VR treatment has proven to be highly effective and the clinicians of the clinic would like to find out whether there are differences in results after a 12-week period which is required for the treatments to be effective. The measurement that will be used is the Combat Exposure Scale.

The Research Hypothesis

For the research hypothesis you would have:

Null hypothesis is H0: CPT = VR

Research hypothesis is H1:CPT VR

Dependent variable: Combat Exposure Scale score changed after treatment

Independent variable: Therapy treatment

Explanation

The hypotheses would require a two tailed test since the difference between them is being tested no matter whether one is more effective or less effective than the other.

Sampling Selected

Choosing stratified random sampling to have a correct representation of all the separate groups of a heterogenous PTSD affected population.

Descriptive Data

Descriptive data such as gender age and shift should be collected to further investigate how separate groups are affected and answer questions related to these separate groups. How effective VR is comparing genders and age groups would be useful information for the research into the treatment.

Does this make sense?

Answer from your tutor:

Yes it does make sense but I would suggest that you add the t test statistic also. The one which will be used to test your hypothesis.

I don't know what that is. Can you explain? The numbers are below.
