Genetically Modified (GM)plants are referred to as bioengineered, transgenic, or genetically engineered organisms. In the United States, regulatory oversight of GMOs is divided between three federal agencies; the FDA, USDA, and the EPA. The FDA oversees GM animals; the USDA GM plants, and the EPA regulates GM plants that contain or produce pesticides. Critics worry there is no "clearly overriding guiding principles for regulating therisks of GMOs and no clear standards to guide agency decisions on whether a GMO should be permitted to be released into the environment. Many localities haveintroduced laws that ban/limit or require labelingof GMO organisms. In July 2016, President Obamasigned into law a bill that requireslabeling of GM ingredients. An executive order by Trumptemporarily froze all new regulations.
