Genital human papillomavirus (HPV) is a common virus that is passed from one person to another through direct skin-to-skin contact during sexual activity. While most cases of HPV cause no symptoms and go away on their own, some types can cause cervical cancer in women. Two vaccines are currently available to protect against the virus. For maximum efficacy, the vaccines should be administered to individuals before they become sexually active. TheCDC recommendsthat girls receive a vaccine for HPV as early as age 11. Should the administration of HPV vaccines to 11-year-old girls require parental consent? Or should girls be entitled to obtain the vaccine on their own without notifying their parents?
