George and Mildred are a married couple of low intelligence in their mid- 50's. Mildred's mother Ethel becomes seriously ill, and the couple feel that they have no option but to take her in and look after her. They decide to allocate Ethel a nice bedroom on the top floor of the house with its own en suite bathroom. Unfortunately, Ethel's condition becomes much worse, causing the couple to panic. Because Ethel is losing so much weight and crying out with pain, the couple are reluctant to go into her room. As a result, they keep the door locked and only open the door when they wish to slide a tray of food into the room. Eventually, after three weeks, during which time they have not dared to look at Ethel, the couple call an ambulance. Ethel is found in a serious condition and rushed to hospital. At the hospital, the doctor in charge, due to an inux of patients caused by a large trafc accident, is unable to see Ethel in time, and she dies. Recent cut backs, caused by the credit crunch, meant that only half of the normal number of doctors were on duty that night. Despite all this, the couple are charged with manslaughter. Whilst on bail, George visits his local pub and gets into an argument about Greek lyric poetry with Eddie, another regular in the pub. George knows nothing about Greek lyric poetry, and is also angry about his impending trial. During the course of the argument things become increasingly nasty, with Eddie insulting George about his low intelligence. Eddie is furious and rushes at George, threatening to kill him. Eddie runs out of the pub to escape, hotly pursued by George. Outside the pub, Eddie trips and falls on the pavement. Whilst he is lying on the oor, Eddie stamps once on his head. Eddie dies at the scene. The post mortem reveals that the actual cause of death was a heart attack due to a thyroid condition that not even Eddie knew about.
