Gillian is very depressed and attempts to commit suicide by throwing herself in the River Trent. Kay, a passer-by, jumps in and saves her.

Gillian is taken to hospital where a junior doctor, Patrick, sees her. It is Patrick's first day in Accident and Emergency. The Accident and Emergency unit is very short staffed as a result of Health Service financial cutbacks and a senior doctor would normally have seen Gillian. Patrick examines Gillian and he finds no major problems. He discharges her with a prescription for a new antibiotic called Stoppaine.

Stoppaine was the subject of a critical article in the previous weeks Lancet (a leading medical journal of great authority), which warned about the danger ofheart attacks occurring in patients who were given the drug after suffering very recent trauma. Patrick had not read the article. Gillian returns home, takes the required dose of Stoppaine and has a heart attack. She is rushed to hospital where she is seen by Simone, a consultant (senior doctor), who diagnoses a head fracture and Gillian is rushed to the operating theatre. Unfortunately she fails to make a full recovery and becomes partially paralysed.
