Give a 6- complete sentence response to the below statement. At least one statement must be questioned.
In this class, Legal & Ethical Issues in Management, I learned that many companies have skewed or straight fallen off the track when it comes to following ethical frameworks in their company. How did they start strong and build their business to an impressive stature and then just throw it all out the window with not thinking ethically? I believe that most people are good, honest, and hard-working people but we are far from perfect. Many driving factors influence people to pursue different goals and aspirations. Sometimes people's moral compass is persuaded by outside influences, such as money, power, self-image, or stress. Ethical frameworks start from the top and funnel down to the lower-level employees. Being retired from the military, I have learned many valuable skills, structure, and core values that drive you to be the best that you can be. Core values and ethical frameworks are not just positive influences, but words to live by. If you just genuinely show respect, put people first, follow the regulations, and lead by example, you have set the stage for a positive ethical environment.
In a world of skewed right and wrong or selfish behavior, it's easy to see how people's decisions are not based on right thinking. For me, I find that the Bible is the strongest ethical framework that can guide us through life, spiritually, and mentally. But in an ethical business framework, I believe that Josephson's Core Values Model is a foundation for leadership to enforce a workplace of positivity, using a virtue ethics approach combined with some elements of stakeholder analysis and utilitarianism. His core values are written as, trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship. There are many psychological pressures and organizational constraints that place limits on people both individually and in organizations. These pressures and constraints tend to compromise ideal or the most ethical solutions for individuals and organizations. For a business, one essential problem is that ethics can cost the organization money or resources, leading to an unethical or even toxic environment.
Professor Lynn Sharp Paine of the Harvard Business School states that managing ethical commitment positively impacts greater employee engagement and creativity. She makes some very good key points to engage in a top to bottom ethical leadership style of trust, helpfulness, and fairness in rewarding creative work. Employees are more likely to engage in discretionary behavior to benefit the organization if they trust their supervisor. Employees also are more likely to take pride and feel ownership in their workplace; when they perceive top management to have high credibility and a coherent set of values, and more likely to share knowledge in an environment of mutual trust and respect. In conclusion, I feel that strict enforcement of core values and regulations from top to bottom leadership can make for a very sought-after business model as well as a productive positive workforce.
