TOWS Strategic Alternatives Huawei is a Chinese multinational technology corporation that designs, develops, produces and sells telecommunications equipment, consumer electronics, and various smart devices. Internal Strengths (S): l. Huawei introduced its own proprietary OS that is used by more than 300 million users. Independent services. Has complete control over the development and maintenance of its software. Ownership of the company. Huawei is a private company wholly owned by its employees. No outside organizations or agencies hold its shares. Extensive R&D division that allows for the release of innovative products (invests 10% of its revenue into R&D). Big opportunity for diversification of products. Internal Weaknesses (W): 1. The USA's blacklisting of Huawei technology. Has taken away the opportunity for Huawei to provide their 5g equipment and products to a significantly sized market in the USA as well as other countries sympathetic to the western power's whims. (Countries Huawei aren't allowed to operate in at the moment: Sweden, Brazil, USA, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Taiwan, de-facto ban for EU) a. Also means that they are unable to access American technology and supplies. Huawei is very reliant on US chips and micro conductors. They are also unable to make use of the Android OS A hit to its brand image and reliability. Weak performances in regions outside ofAPAC. Partly due to political factors. Does not have the capital strength to compete with giants like Samsung and Apple. External Opportunities (0): 1. Growth of 5g technology. This opportunity extends to the potential markets for new materials and equipment for the network itself to new technology for smartphones (new products) Falling technology prices. Creates an opportunity for higher quality and affordable smartphones. Shift of consumer preference from hardware to software. Opportunity for players to focus on subscription services (eg. Apple TV, Apple +), or pivoting to selling software upgrades. Maxi-Maxi Strategy (Use Strengths To Maximize Opportunities): Have Huawei's R&D look into the potential pre-downloaded applications in Huawei gadgets to address consumer preferences for efficiency and better user experience on their end. (51, S3, 03) Mini-Maxi Strategy (Minimize Weaknesses By Taking Advantage Of Opportunities): External Threats (T): 1. Better, more durable smartphone technology and material. A trend of less frequent smartphone upgrades may force industry players to change their product focus. Large increase in saturation of providers of affordable and quality products. It is also difficult for industry players to maintain a consumer base off brand name alone. Global recession- purchasing powers of many consumers have reduced. Increased inflation also means that cost of labor and materials will increase. MaxiMini Strategy (Use Strengths To Minimize Threats): 0 Have Huawei's R&D look into what countries could be a good investment since China's market is already saturated.
