Given the introduction of the research in the paragraphs below, what do you think is the population of interest for this research study?
The present research tests the prediction that sharing content on social media inflates subjective knowledge. Sharing content in a domain signals that the sharer has expertise in that domain. We therefore expect that internalizing ones sharing behavior into the self-concept will result in increased subjective knowledge in the domain of the shared content.
Theoretically, the psychological mechanism of internalization should operate independently of objective knowledge. We leverage the phenomenon of sharing without reading to examine this prediction. Reading externally generated contentsuch as an online news articlegenerally leads to increased objective knowledge in the content domain because reading is one way to learn (Hoch & Deighton, 1989). If sharers simply pass over an article without reading it (or read only the headline), however, their actions should have little or no effect on actual understanding of the content domain. Thus, evidence that sharing influences subjective knowledge even when people have not read what they share would serve as strong evidence that this relationship cannot be explained by differences in objective knowledge.
