Goal Sheet / Investment Policy Statement (IPS) is a critical process to ensure that we as investment advisors are able to assess the client investment objective. Individual reason for investment vary, one may be seeking to invest for capital appreciation, where as the other may have an agenda of capital preservation in mind or may be to generate income. the nature of the investor could be gauge on the objective of the investment he would like to make. Some investors may have a combination of all the three. hence it is important to understand the explict and implicit needs of the individual seeking to invest. It is also important to assess the person financial capibility to ensure that one can ascertain the committment that he can provide towards his investment. hence it is important to assess the statement of networth and the statement of cash flow of each investor seperatly. As an advisor it is important to also identify if the investor has an investment constraints E.G liquidity constraint, in order too tialor the investment advise accordingly. the goal sheet can also be used to capture the risk appettite of the client as that is one of the critical factors to develop the portfolio for the customer and provide him with the optimum risk adjusted return. The time horizon and the objective can be captured on the goal sheet assisting the advisor to act accrordingly in helping the investor meet his investment objective.
