Godfrey Makobane is the plant manager of a light assembly plant in Cape Town. About a year ago, Melvin Alers, the plant manager in Gauteng, was visiting the Cape Town plant when the two managers began comparing absenteeism and turnover rates (among other things). Melvin knew that his plant was averaging about a 5% rate for each category. Godfrey called in Ms Amusa, his HR manager, and was surprised to hear that Cape Town was running at a 10% absenteeism rate and a 12% turnover rate. Soon after Melvins visit, Godfrey met with his two supervisors to discuss these two rates. Nomvuyo Bekwa, one of the supervisors, said that there might be a relationship between job satisfaction and absenteeism and turnover. A consultant was hired, and a job satisfaction survey was given to the Cape Town employees. The employees completed the questionnaires and the results were handed to Godfrey. The results were summarised as follow: Job satisfaction category Percentage of employees who are satisfied (happy) Percentage of employees who are dissatisfied (unhappy) The job it self 40% 60% Relationships with co-workers 49% 51% Immediate supervisor 45% 55% Career development / promotions 37% 63% Compensation and benefits 20% 80% The work environment 35% 65% Godfrey never expected the results of the plants very first job satisfaction survey to be this low.
