Going to watch the movie 12 years a slave was an experience that I will never forget. Unbelievably, I remember walking into the theater at South point mall in Durham and noticing that the people who had come to view the film were mostly from the white race. Not only was the majority of the population white but they were also mostly old men, some who seemed as if they could have actually been a part of the slave economy era. Seeing this kind of startled me and slightly upset me at the same time. Not meaning to sound racist or anything, because I know that everyone has a right to go and watch whatever film they desire to, as long as they meet the theater requirements, but, as a person of African American descent it confuses you to see a white person watching a movie based on the suffering and oppression of your own people which was most likely caused by the actions and ignorance of their people.
