Who We Are
Give Kids the World Village makes dreams come true for critically ill kids and their families. The 89-acre nonprofit storybook resort located in Central Florida provides magical weeklong, cost-free vacations to "wish-kids" from around the world. We work hand in hand with local wish-granting organizations or Make-A-Wish foundations to create the trip of a lifetime and make dreams come true. Inspired by the pages of a fairytale, Give Kids The World Village is an enchanted village where families facing unthinkable challenges can relax, experience joy, and create unforgettable memories together. A place where happiness inspires hope. Where carousel rides, unlimited ice cream, swimming with mermaids, and nightly parties have the power to uplift spirits and renew optimism for our families facing unimaginable challenges due to a child's critical illness. From the world's largest game of Candy Land, snoring trees, and a space-themed ice cream parlor to star-filled castles and accessible rides, every aspect of our storybook resort was designed with happiness in mind (About Us | Give Kids the World Village, 2021). The Village provides medically equipped, fully furnished accommodation, transportation, tickets to theme parks, meals, daily entertainment, and more. If the wish-kid is too sick to visit the parks, the magic from the parks comes to the Village.
Need Statement
In order to effectively accomplish our mission to provide a cost-free experience for families with critically ill children and never turn a child away, transportation to the Village is vital. While Make-A-Wish pays for flights or other means of transportation, many local wish-granting organizations may only include transportation for one parent and the critically ill child, and some do not include any travel expenses to the Village. In 2022 the Village hosted 333 families; 87% were from Make-A-Wish, leaving 13% or 43 of the families without transportation for the who family.
Employee - Volunteer Ratio
As of the end of 2022, the Village had 177 employees, down from pre-Covid numbers of 238 as we continue recruiting more employees. The Village is fortunate to have 21,077 active volunteers valued at $2,238,000.
Budget and Expenses
Currently, the Village relies on donations from organizations to cover our transportation costs. In 2022, we received $10,192 in donations, and the rest of the funding came from our program activities expense of $27,647,953. The Village is a 98% four-star charity for the fifteenth consecutive year, according to Charity Navigator (Give Kids The World, 2021).
Allocation of Grant Funds
Due to the financial hardships of caring for a child with a terminal illness, many families do not have the extra money to cover the cost of transportation to the Village. Donations for transportation expenses in 2022 were $10,192. The average price for a non-stop flight for a family of four from New York to Orlando is approximately $4,151 and does not include special transportation that may be required to go to arrive and return from the Village. If awarded the grant, the Village of a two-year grant for $150,000 consisting of two annual payments of $75,000 to set up a dedicated fund for the transportation expenses of the immediate family and the wish kid.
