Gross (Hospital) Death Rate

Formula:

Number of inpatient deaths (including NB) in a period x 100 ________________________________________________ Number of discharges (including A/C and NB deaths) in the same period

Remember: a death is a discharge, if discharges are specified as LIVE discharges, then you need to add in the A/C and NB deaths.

Also, patients who are DOA (dead on arrival) are not included in the gross death rate because DOAs are not admitted to the hospital.

Fetal deaths are not included in the hospital death rate but rather are calculated separately.
