Guidelines for Making a Response on a Reading Selection A response is a reaction to what you read. It is not a summary. Tell me what I DO NOT already know. Responding to a reading involves making connections between the reading and beyond. This means connecting the reading to your own life, happenings at school or in the community, similar events at other times and places, or other people or problems that this story brings to mind. You might also see connections between this story and other readings or things that you have heard about. Explore how it is similar or conflicts with your own beliefs and life experiences. Your reactions and opinions should reflect your understanding of the story. Give reasons and support (usually given as a quote from the story) for your comments. Your assignment is to type a response to "Desiree's Baby" using proper formatting: paragraph form, double-spaced; 12-font; heading (title and your name); and references. You need to begin your response as usual with a thematic statement: identifying the title of the story, the author's name and a general sentence stating the theme of the story. Then respond to one of the following using as much detail and support as is needed. Think bigger than just this story. It is due at the beginning of class on Wednesday, November 10, 2021. For example: 1. Relate your own experiences or background knowledge to the reading and its theme. For example, what experiences have you had that are similar to the events described in the reading? What places or situations or problems resemble those that you know? OR 2. What is the writer trying to say, AND how do you feel about it? Remember, writers are not teaching a lesson. The writer is exploring the human condition (how we behave, why we behave the way we do). Marking Criteria 710 Correct first sentence /1 /3 Overall clarity (grammar; mechanics; formatting) Content (complexity and depth/quotations of support/ attempts new vocabulary from class) 16 Any form of academic dishonesty (plagiarism, etc.) will result in an automatic "0", and a formal report being written to the academic integrity committee.
