H355 Data Set: Pain and Heart Rate

Physiologically pain is reflected in vital signs. The first vital sign to reflect that there is anything wrong is always the heart rate. (Increased heart rate increases cardiac output). The data below reflects the self reported pain level of 16 patients and their corresponding heart rate. Using this data, you are asking the questions: Is there a difference in age between patients reporting pain levels > 5 vs patients reporting pain levels 5?Is pain a factor in heart rate?

1. Enter the data into Excel. Run descriptive statistics on Age, pain scale, and heart rate. Determine the percentages of Male and Female.

2. Determine if there is a correlation between age and pain scale and heart rate (hint, these 3 columns need to be next to each other so that they can all be selected at once).

3. Next split the data into 2 groups, the heart rate and age of those that had pain levels 5 and the heart rate and age of those with pain levels >5.

  • Run a t-test Assuming Unequal variances between the heart rate of these 2 groups to see if there is a statistically significant difference.
  • Run a t-test Assuming Unequal variances between the age of these 2 groups to see if there is a statistically significant difference.

Address all the points of the Grading Rubric by typing your responses into the Excel file (at the bottom of the page in Excel are little tabs that say sheet 1, sheet 2, etc. If you click on these a new page of excel opens, its like having pages in a notebook).

Age Pain 0-10 Scale Heart Rate Sex

Data Analysis Project

The project will involve taking a data set and entering it into Excel appropriately, running descriptive statistics, Pearson r correlations, and t-tests. After data has been analyzed, students will explain the results of the analysis and answer the research questions. The data analysis project will be evaluated using the following grading rubric:

H355 Data Analysis Project Grading Rubric

Criteria Possible Points
1. Enters data correctly into EXCEL 10
2. Performs descriptive statistics and correlations correctly 10
3. Performs t-tests/ANOVA correctly 15
4. Discusses what the descriptive statistics results mean in terms of the mean and the standard deviation (keeping in mind the higher the SD, the more variability there is in the scores)

10

5. IF there is a correlation in the direction, states what the correlation results mean in terms of the strength of the r value

10

6. Discusses what the results of the t-test and/or the ANOVA means in relationship to the p values and statistical significance

10

7. States what the data analysis tells you about the answer to the Research Question(s)
