Hassan Darwish is a stateless man who grew up in Jabal El-Hussein - a Palestinian refugee camp near Amman, Jordan. He came to Canada in 2018 at the age of 18, and he made a successful refugee claim. However, he did not apply for permanent residence. He has been diagnosed with Schizophrenia and while he has been under treatment, he has been hospitalized several times. He has also been convicted of two offences - mischief under $5,000 and assault - for which he served a period of probation. This stemmed from an incident in which he was confronted for shoplifting at a London Drugs in downtown Vancouver, during which he destroyed a store display and assaulted a store employee. After completing his probation, he was detained by immigration authorities for being inadmissible to Canada because of his criminal record. The Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) has detained Hassan so that they can obtain identity and travel documents for him from the Jordanian Embassy in Ottawa. However, Jordanian officials are highly reluctant to provide travel documents for stateless Palestinians. Hassan has been in detention since December 2, 2023. He had a 48-hour detention review on December 4, a 7-day detention review on December 9, and a 30-day detention review at the end of every month since. The PBLC has been asked to help Hassan prepare for his 30-day detention review coming up at the Immigration Division on April 30. Several local charities have stepped forward to support Hassan. The Mennonite Central Committee has promised to provide him with counselling and mental health supports. A local mosque has raised funds for his living expenses. The Awad family has promised to provide him with a safe living arrangement in a basement suite in their home in Coquitlam. Hassan's psychiatrist, Dr. Rappaport, states that if he is able to follow his treatment plan and take his medication, he should be able to make a full recovery. Before he became ill, Hassan was an engineering student at UBC. When he recovers, he hopes to continue with his education.
