Have you ever wondered if you were leaving the correct tip when at a restaurant? Complete this exercise to compute four different tips.

1. Review an old bill or come up with a new total price at a restaurant. Please make sure that your amount is different from other classmates amounts.

2. Use the following values:

• You really liked your service = 20% tip
• The service was above average = 15% tip
• The service was okay = 10% tip
• The service was terrible = 5% tip
• (If you do not leave a tip, servers may think you just forgot and that their service was fine.)

3. Round your total bill to the nearest dollar, or tens of dollars, or hundreds of dollars, and then use these tricks to tell the class what your four tips could be!

I just had a $38.17 bill at a local restaurant. I am going to round my bill to $40.00

To find a 10% tip, I take 10% of 40, which is $4.00.

My 10% tip is $4.00

To find a 5% tip, I take 10% of 40, which is $4.00, then half it, which is $2.00.

My 5% tip is $2.00

To find a 15% tip, I take 10% of 40, which is $4.00, then half it, which is $2.00, and then add the two together, which is $6.00.

My 15% tip is $6.00

To find a 20% tip, I take 10% of 40, which is $4.00, and then double it, which is $8.00.

My 20% tip is $8.00
