Hazardous Materials + Basic Emergency Response

Response Scenario 7

Just before lunch, your engine company responds to a working fire in a single-family wood frame dwelling. The fire started in a bedroom and extended into the adjacent hallway. Your apparatus is first in, and your crew extends the initial attack line, makes access to the seat of the fire, and quickly knocks it down. The fire is declared under control, and the crew transitions to overhaul. A few minutes later, your officer directs the crew to exit the building. After a short rehab period, your crew reenters to assist with overhaul, wearing bunker pants, jacket, helmet, gloves, and eye protection. Your engine company remains on scene for another hour, mopping up and eventually turning the building back over to the homeowner. The crew returns to quarters and places the engine back in service. You have a headache, mild nausea, and a feeling of fatigue. It doesn't resolve over the remainder of the shift, and you go home the next morning still not feeling 100%.

  1. Do you believe the ill feeling you have is related to the smoke exposure? If so, what do you think you were exposed to?
  2. Should air monitoring be conducted at the scene prior to reentering the structure for overhaul?
  3. At what point would you deem the environment safe to operate without self-contained breathing apparatus? 4. If you began feeling worse either at the firehouse or later at home and sought medical attention at a local hospital, do you think you would receive medical treatment for a smoke exposure? Response Scenario 8 - Your engine company arrives on the scene of a vehicle accident involving a small passenger vehicle and a tanker truck carrying 20 tons of anhydrous ammonia. The tanker rolled over on its side as a result of the accident and slid down the highway for approximately 100 feet. There are no injuries to the three victims in the passenger vehicle, but the driver of the tanker truck is pinned inside the cab. You notice the smell of ammonia in the air but see no visible signs of a product release. The regional hazardous materials team, fully staffed with technician level responders, is also on scene. Your company officer confers with the hazardous materials team and then directs you and another fire fighter to don your SCBA and full turnout gear and evaluate the driver for injuries.
  4. Would full structural fire fighters' turnout gear and SCBA offer adequate protection in this situation?
  5. Based on your level of training operations level would you be qualified to perform this task?
  6. Describe the steps you would need to take, including obtaining information about ammonia. Response Scenario 9 - Your truck company is dispatched to assist the regional hazardous materials team and law enforcement at the scene of an illicit laboratory. The hazardous materials team is planning an entry to sample several unmarked glass bottles. Your company officer receives orders to support the hazardous materials team by setting up a decontamination corridor. You and your crew are trained to the operations level, along with the mission-specific responsibilities of personal protective equipment (PPE) and technical decontamination.
  7. Based on this scenario, should you be operating under the guidance of a hazardous materials technician, an allied professional, or standard operating procedures?
  8. How would you handle the samples taken by the entry team as they move through the decontamination corridor?
  9. A law enforcement canine is on scene and may have been contaminated during the search. What steps would you take to perform decontamination on the animal? Response Scenario 10- Your engine company has been called in on a mutual aid request to a neighboring jurisdiction. A chlorine release at a fixed facility has affected approximately 50 employees of an adjacent office complex. Upon your arrival, the incident commander (IC) directs your crew to assist with setting up a mass decontamination corridor using two fire engines. Your captain directs you to work with the fire fighters on scene to assist them with moving the victims through the mass decontamination corridor. 1. Which sources of information would be available to you for determining the correct mass decontamination procedure? 2. Identify the methods you would use to access those resources in a hazardous materials/ WMD incident. 3. Describe the supplies and equipment required to set up and implement mass decontamination operations in your jurisdiction. 4. Which methods, tools, or equipment would you use to evaluate the effectiveness of the decontamination operation? Criminal Investigation - Discussion Board 4- ( have no material for this the scenarios each material i have is highlighted bold) Auto theft is a significant property crime. Discuss why it is so popular with criminals; the different types; and attempts to combat and reduce the crime. Include any other facts you learned that contribute to this phenomenon.
