Healthcare professionals who begin in clinical roles may later find themselves in management positions. A significant part of this new role will be the development of policies and procedures that influence those employed by the organization. It is not uncommon for managers to allow their own personal biases to influence them in the workplace, thus influencing the policies developed and the decisions that are made. The organizational barriers that they may face could be a result of their own degrees of limitations and resistance that they faced as a result of their attempts to implement some of the decisions that they had previously made. The personal barriers they may face could be a result of their religion, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, and so forth. While a manager is not expected to be influenced by these barriers, he or she often is.

Demonstrate some of the ways that a healthcare professional can overcome these barriers once he or she assumes a managerial role. If he or she is unable to put these barriers into perspective and overcome them, what impact may this have on his or her ability to maintain the role as manager in the future?
