Hello,
I am writing an essay in cog neuroscience words to answer: Critically evaluate the hypothesis that the hippocampus has a time-limited role in episodic memory.
I have found a study in which I would like to incorporate
REFERENCE STUDY
Jezek, K., Wesierska, M., & Fenton, A. A. (2002). Hippocampus-dependent retrieval and hippocampus-independent extinction of place avoidance navigation, and stress-induced out-of-context activation of a memory revealed by reversible lesion experiments in rats. Physiological research, 51, S35-S48.
please if you can assist me in formatting a template in summarising the study and it findings in relation to answering the question I would appreciate it greatly as I have tried for over 1 and half hours to articulate myself and found myself confused. I would like points on critically evaluating points to include in the theme of my essay.
I have already attempted, but I am struggling to apply how it answers the question of my essay and critically evaluate.
ANSWER ALREADY:
The impact of stress on EM retrieval poses an intriguing dimension to our exploration. Stress, particularly in tasks like the Morris Water Maze, may introduce confounding variables affecting memory recall (Chernyuk et al, 2021).. Analysing stress-related factors, such as corticosterone levels or behavioural indicators, can provide insights into the intricate interplay between stress and hippocampal-dependent memory retrieval(Klier et al, 2020). Jezek et al. (2002) ran 2 experiment utilising reversible lesion techniques to investigate theimpact of hippocampal inactivation on the extinction and retrieval of place avoidance navigation (PAN) and the impact of stress on inducing interhemispheric transfer of lateralized (experimental methods used to cause
To investigate whether the hippocampus is essential for retrieval of a well-established place avoidance memory. Rats were trained, while foraging for scattered food in an test arena to avoid a region where they would receive shocks. When avoidance performance approached the approximate limit at which point learning was no longer significant after sevral days, tetrodotoxin (TTX) was administered into the dorsal hippocampi to facilitate bilateral hippocampal inactivation. Two paradigms were tested whereby EM retrieval was tested by reinforced training session and unreinforced extinction session(Jezek et al, 2002). Findings indicated a functionally intact hippocampus is essential for retrieval of a well-learned avoidance memory but that neither the successful retrieval of the memory, nor the functional integrity of the hippocampus is required for the extinction of the avoidance behaviour. Since hippocampal inactivation abolished any place avoidance behavior, these data support the view that idiothesis supported by allothetic updating is hippocampus-dependent. Expression of the place avoidance memory was not necessary for the extinction of the place avoidance behavior. Since place avoidance memory is hippocampus-dependent and the hippocampus was inactivated, this demonstrates that place avoidance memory need not be activated for its expression to be extinguished. This adds to the body of evidence that extinction does not require the direct modification of an engram. Rather, extinction is an indication that a novel, separate memory has been learned and this extinction memory competes with the initial reinforced memory for control of the subjects behavior.
(Unsure of implications this means has on essay question and critical evaluation.)
Please help me articulate my answer to the question, the link to the paper https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/12479785/ and a reference is available
