hello , i need an answer on the last page question based on my Discussion please .
In the world of accounting, goodwill is considered to be an intangible asset (Ayres et al.,2019). The notion of goodwill arises when an organization is looking to take on another company and is willing and able to pay a higher cost over the value of the organization's assets (Ayres et al.,2019). It arises in business predominantly at the point of acquisition by another organization. The acquired organization can ascertain that there is a high brand value emanating from its processes, structure, and operations. As such, a premium should be placed on the fair value of the organization's assets (Ayres et al., 2019). Issues arise when the transaction is not an arm's length transaction, and parties disagree on the pricing of the goodwill. Often, it is a contentious issue for many organizations in those most companies seeking to acquire the respective businesses are not willing to pay the said premium. Under GAAP goodwill is considered to be an intangible asset. Therefore, it has an indefinite life and, as such, does not require to be amortized (Li & Sloan, 2017). However, an organization that recognizes goodwill must account for impairment every year, and it is only private organizations are authorized to decide to amortize goodwill over ten years. Often, goodwill becomes impaired resulting from business changes; it could also arise from legal issues (Li & Sloan, 2017). When the same occurs, it is best that its value is written down and companies recognize the write down in their income statements, leading to a loss. Companies that often decide to write off goodwill do so because it's a better way to adict the income statements, leading to a loss. Companies that often decide to write off goodwill do so because it's a better way to adjust the organization's books downward than depreciating assets. Great post! You mention that goodwill impairment must be accounted for every year, but what do you believe would impair goodwill? As goodwill is an intangible asset and is overall a fairly grey field, what would cause goodwill to drop dramatically? Or simply decline marginally? And further, how could a company prevent goodwill from declining and instead have the intangible value increase from year to year
