Welcome to the Knowledge Worker Age 2008/02/06 Cape Town.
The Knowledge Worker Age needs great leaders who engage with people’s heads and hearts, not just
their hands; most leaders still use Industrial Age management practices.
“The reality is, there is very little evidence of role modelling of what it looks like to lead in the
Knowledge Worker Age,” MD of FranklinCovey, Adele Hall says.
Standards for judging leaders are changing. They are no longer evaluated by achievement, but by the
trust they create and the systems they put into practice to ensure long-term success, by their ability
to define clear purposes and in their ability to get each member to contribute to the workforce and
its objectives.
“To lead effectively today, one needs a new tool set, skill set and a new mind-set.”
A radically new paradigm, or way of viewing the world, is required to lead people to greatness;
seeing people as four dimensional individuals, recognising body, mind, heart and spirit.

The changing work force
In the “Industrial Age”, managers were authoritarian, bureaucratic and controlling. Now we are
moving into the “Knowledge Worker Age”. Organisations are flattening and virtual teams are
commonplace as we enter an era of entrepreneurialism and global competition.
Educationalist Peter Drucker says, “Until recently it was taken for granted that most people were
subordinates who did as they were told. The advent of the knowledge worker is changing this, and
fast ... and for this change, management is totally unprepared.” Challenges that once took years to
materialise now arise overnight as a result of fast-paced technological changes. Knowledge and
creativity are at a premium, and are totally mobile. People no longer just show up for work. They
want to make a difference. They want to be fulfilled. Being able to contribute, and be recognised, is
becoming more of a motivator than a pay cheque.
