hello, i need help with this question of college physics 2, the question was to include definitions of terms such as positive, negative, conduction and induction as they relate to static charge and to also discuss how the instruments below help to illustrate Coulomb

here are two of the machine related to the topic, but i dont fully understand how they really illustrate coulomb

Instructions for the Use of No. 2039 Bell Chimes No. 2039 . Description. The apparatus consists of three balls attached to a frame from which small insulated balls are also hung. The frame has a tapered hole at the bottom to fit an insulating stand, such as Cat. Nos. 2023 or 2024. Use. Mount the apparatus on an insulating stand. A static machine, either a Wimshurst type with rotating plates or a Van de Graaf type with large spherical elec- trode, should be connected to the Bell Chimes. When using a Wimshurst type machine, where each plate is charged with opposite polarity, connect one terminal to the center bell via the clip on the insulating stand. The other terminal should be connected to the ring on top of the device. When using a Van de Graaf type machine, connect the center bell to the large sphere which typically develops a positive charge. Connect the ring to a grounded point in the lab such as a water pipe. As the static machine begins to operate, the bells become charged, the outer bells having a charge opposite to that of the center bell. The steel balls are attracted to one of the bells until it strikes the bell producing a chime. Upon impact the ball becomes charged with the same polarity of the bell it struck. The ball is then repulsed from the bell and is attracted to the second bell until the ball impacts it and becomes charged with the same polarity as that bell. This process continues so long as the apparatus continues to be charged. Parts List. The Parts List gives all parts by Sargent-Welch Stock Number. When ordering parts, specify by Stock Number. Description Stock No. Bell 12-1233 Ball 12-1234 Shoulder Stud 12-1236 Ring Knob 12-1237 Bell Support Rod 12-1241 Retainer Nut 12-1245 Insulating Spacer 12-1618INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE USE OF NO. 2041 HAIL STORM AND SMOKE CONDENSER No. 2041. Hail Storm and Smoke Condenser. Volta's Hail Storm. When used to simulate a hail storm, the ring fixture at the the top should be unscrewed, the cap removed and the metal ring lifted out. Re- place cap, mount the apparatus on one of our No. 2023 Insulating Stands , or set on a glass plate and connect the two terminals of the static machine to the upper and lower plates. Now when the static machine is operated, the pith balls are attracted to the upper plate, charged and repelled to the lower, then back again, thus keeping up a movement back and forth as long as the plates are rotated. Volta suggested that hail stones might be attracted and repelled between charged clouds in a similar manner. Smoke Condenser. When used as a smoke condenser, the cover should be again removed, the pith balls taken out and the rings with points replaced on the bottom , Now introduce one of the slow- burning smoke pyramids, setting it near the center and after lighting it, put on the cover. When the static machine is operated, the smoke particles are immediately attracted to either plate, thus condensing the smoke as it forms: A very striking experiment
