Submitting your assignment in APA format means, at a minimum, you will need the following: Title page: Remember the running head and title in all capital letters. Body: The body of your paper begins on the page following the title page and it must be double-spaced between paragraphs. The typeface should be 12-pt. Times Roman or 12-pt. Courier in regular black type. Do not use color, bold type, or italics except as required for APA level headings and references. This assignment will be assessed using additional criteria provided here. Reference Fortune. (2014). Fortune 500 2014. Retrieved from http://fortune.com/fortune500/ General Motors LAST YEAR'S RANK: 7 Here's how you'd sum up 2014 for General Motors in three words: recalls, recalls, recalls. The iconic American auto brand spent most of the year dealing with an ever-expanding recall scandal that saw CEO Mary Barra appear in front of Congress multiple times and the establishing of a $400 million-plus compensation protocol for victims of GM's faulty ignition switches. Despite all this, though, sales were strong throughout the year, as GM rode the wave of industry-wide gains. Strengths At the end of the day, GM still has some of the most recognizable brands in the auto industry: Chevrolet, GMC and others still hold cachet with car shoppers. Weaknesses GM is still going to have to deal with the aftershocks of the recall scandal for a while. Barra has done an admirable job of working to change the company culture, but this isn't a problem that is just going to disappear. GM still has to pay up the money for the victim compensation fund, and there is still the looming spectre of charges from the Justice Department. Opportunities The company is investing in autonomous cars and smart highways, and is working in the allelectric Chevy Bolt, an affordable alternative to Tesla. Despite being thought of by many as a legacy company, GM has actually been pretty progressive when it comes to technology. Threats As with all big auto manufacturers, the most significant threat is the younger, more techfocused companies like Tesla and Google. With even Apple reportedly considering getting into the car space, this threat may not be as distant as it once seemed to be.
