Recent COVID pandemic waves persistently revealed the underlying fault lines of our healthcare system, ranging from public health, unevenness of insurance coverage, socio-economic determinants of health, and the personal and financial wellbeing of healthcare providers and institutions. With close to 1 million US deaths due to severe COVID infection, the strategic reforms proposed by Blumenthal (2020) and Hamblin (2021) go the core of our learning in this course. Blumenthal's article addresses the reforms that would bolster the effectiveness of US healthcare in providing routine services and our ability to manage through future crises. Hamblin, on the other hand, addresses reforms needed to provide "complex care" (long term value based care for patients with chronic physical and mental comorbidities). These are not viewpoints on two separate topics, but they come together in our care of elderly patients, long term care for mental and addiction illnesses, care for patients with chronic diseases, and even for patients with "long COVID" health adversities. Based on your course learning and your assigned readings for this week, integrate your thoughts and perspectives on the reform proposals presented in these articles.
