Components of a Case Citation = 1. Case Name = a. Underlined or italicized (never both) b. Not in all Caps c. Plaintiff and Defendant, separated by a "v." d. Set off by a comma 2. First Number = the volume number of the Reporter where the Case is located. 3. Letter Abbreviation = a. the name of the Reporter, which also denotes jurisdiction. b. Sometimes with a number and the letter "d". This indicates which "series" it is the publication of that Reporter. Reporter volumes go from 1 through 999, then start over with a second series of volumes 1-999, and then a third series of volumes 1 through 999 and so on. The Second series of 999 volumes would be noted as "2d" and the Third series of 999 volumes would be noted as "3d". 4. Second Number = the page number in the Reporter where the case begins. 5. Additional Numbers (if any) = a. called a "pinpoint cite" b. indicates the exact page within the case you are quoting from or referencing in some way. c. leads the reader to the exact location of the material you are using. 6. Parenthetical Information = a. will always have at least the date when the case was decided.
